Problems in Texas juvenile detention facility highlight difficult issues

The New York Times has an article today about the Coke County Juvenile Justice Center in Bronte, Texas. Among some of the issues this center is having are overcrowding and difficulties recruiting and retaining qualified staff, reports of violence and abuse, reports of sexual abuse by officers, and rotating leadership. It's a very interesting read.

Race and Juvenile Justice

In light of the Jena Six case, the NJ Star Ledger Editorial Board published a short but interesting post about race and criminal justice. To quote:
According to a national study done by the Youth Law Center, a black youth is six times more likely to be locked up than a white peer, even when charged with similar crimes and when neither had a prior record.
In New Jersey, while minorities account for 34 percent of the state's juvenile population, the state's juvenile detention population is 82 percent minority.
Numbers obviously don't tell the whole story but they ought to cause policymakers to raise questions...
