A look at our neighbor - New York State

This new report, "Widening the Lens: A Panoramic View of Juvenile Justice in New York State" from the Vera Institute of Justice takes a look at key indicators in the New York state juvenile justice system and identifies issues for local stakeholder and policy makers to address. As stated in the executive summary, this new report:

identifies and calculates key data—indicators—in five central areas of the juvenile justice system: arrest, referral to court, detention, court processing, and disposition. These indicators provide insight into how state and local juvenile justice systems operate, from arrest through disposition, and how local systems compare across county lines....

The sample observations include, but are not limited to, the following:

The proportion of juvenile delinquency cases that are referred to court—whether immediately or after an attempt at diversion—varies dramatically statewide, from 19 to 91 percent.

The highest rates of juvenile delinquency detention usage are clustered in, but not limited to, large counties that have a secure facility in their jurisdiction.

The disproportionate representation of black youth increases as youth advance through the juvenile justice system.

Median processing times (from petition to disposition) in juvenile delinquency original court petitions vary widely from county to county, from 22 to 120 days.

In large counties, the proportion of juvenile delinquency placements (from original petitions) that involve a felony adjudication ranges from 36 to 73 percent.

It's always interesting to see how our neighbors do things and what we can learn from their successes and mistakes.

How does your Champion Team promote a Safe and Respectful Environment?

One thing we've found is that Champion Teams are made of creative folks who are great at finding new ways to help promote and maintain Safe and Respectful Environments.

At Manor Woods, a JJC Residential Treatment Home, the Champion Team posted the 16 Strategies on brightly colored laminated paper throughout the hallways, an effective reminder for staff!
