CSRE Year 3 - Updates
August 16, 2007 2:18:33 PM
Thanks to support from the NJ Juvenile Justic Commission, Creating Safe and Respectful Environments (CSRE) will continue for a third year!
In Year 3, we begin addressing the issue of trauma and youth in juvenile justice. This includes two brand new training modules for officers, supervisors, social services and education staff, in addition to administrators.
The first module will focus on understanding how trauma effects youth and their behaviors, as well as the role of community violence. Special attention will be paid to management strategies for staff.
The second module focuses specifically on juvenile justice officers and staff. This training will provide information on vicarious trauma, burnout and will teach specific stress-management techniques.
In addition to providing ongoing training and support, we will continue to emphasize the important work of the Champion Teams in the county Juvenile Detention Centers and JJC run Residential Community Homes.
Our Fall Champion Team rally will be held in late October and will have a specific focus on strategies for managing gang-involved youth. We are planning to have a panel discussion and open forum where Champion Teams can share experiences and learn best practices directly from one another.
Please email me at jacobas@umdnj.edu if you have any suggestions for the Champion Team rallies.
We also will be welcoming 7 new JJC run Residential Community Homes to the CSRE program. These programs will recieve basic CSRE training and Champion Team training.
I will be presenting at the NJJDA conference, on Wednesday 9/19/07 on the topic of "Trauma and the Juvenile Justice Worker." This full day training will serve as a preview of the work we'll be doing thoughout the state this year.
Year 2 is winding down and Year 3 is already taking form here at CSRE. I'm looking forward to continuing our work together and hope to hear back from you about the issues that are affecting you as you do this important work.
