"Welcome to the Creating Safe and Respectful Environments II" (CSRE II) home page. We at the Violence Institute of New Jersey are proud to be starting our second year of training for the New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission (NJJJC). This year we will be providing 4 distinct trainings, as well as ongoing Champion Team Consultation and quarterly Best Practice newsletters.

Our goals for this training year are as follows:

  1. Improve staff communication with each other and the youth
  2. Enhance staff's understanding of mental illness and appropriate ways to respond to youth in psychiatric crisis
  3. Enhance the quality and quantity of behavior modification programs in detention/secure facilities
  4. Support Champion Team effectiveness in each center
  5. Enhance the effectiveness of supervisors in motivating staff to deliver safe and respectful environments in detention/secure facilities
  6. Create networking opportunities between centers aimed at sharing best practice approaches

Course Descriptions:

1. Understanding Mental Health Disorders 

Description

This 3 hour training will assist officers and staffs to understand mental health disorders and how they may present in the youth we serve. Other areas covered include, understanding normal and abnormal adolescent behavior, the role of medication in psychiatric care and ways to respond when observing these behaviors.

Objective

Staff will report an improved understanding of how mental illness manifests itself in the youth we serve and an enhanced confidence in how to respond to a youth in psychiatric crisis.

Target Audience

All detention/secure staff who work with the youth.

Number of offerings

This training will be offered twice to accommodate all staff who need to attend.

Host Responsibilities

The training coordinator will secure a room for the training, a wall or screen to project a PowerPoint presentation, any refreshments they feel are appropriate, and identifying the number of expected participants when scheduling this training.

2. Managers/Supervisors Training

Description

A 3 hour training curriculum on principles of effective supervision that will enable managers and supervisors to motivate staff to embrace the Safe and Respectful principles.

Objective

Supervisors will report improvement in their skill sets with regard to motivating their subordinates to meet their expectations.

Target Audience

All staff with supervisory responsibilities.

Number of offerings

 Host Responsibilities

The training coordinator will secure a room for the training and identify the number of expected participants when scheduling this training.                   

3. Behavior Modification Programs

Description              

Up to 3 hours of on-site training and consultation on designing and running effective level/point systems in detention/secure settings will be offered to identified staff involved in managing the behavior modification system.The primary focus will be on creating and maintaining a system that is well understood by staff and adolescents to provide immediate and motivating reinforcement for pro-social behavior.

Objective

Detention/secure facilities will report having a behavior modification system that they feel has improved over the course of the CSRE II award year.

Target Audience

Any staff that are responsible for creating or managing the center's behavior modification system.

Number of offerings

One time

Host Responsibilities

The training coordinator will secure a room for the training and identify the number of expected participants when scheduling this training.

4. Communication that Promotes Cooperation- Practicing the Skills

Description

This 3 hour curriculum is an advanced version of the original Creating Safe and Respectful Environments training. Through experiential learning, officers will learn how to incorporate the 16 recommended strategies for creating safe and respectful environments into their day to day interactions with the youth they supervise.

Objective

Staff will report improvement in communication skills.

Target Audience

All detention/secure staff who work with the youth.

Number of offerings

This training will be offered twice to accommodate all staff who needs to attend.
