Program Name LifeSkills Training (LST)

LST is a three-year classroom-based substance abuse prevention and reduction intervention. LST targets social and psycho-social factors associated with drug usage. The program’s basic premise is that preventing drug use with younger populations will ultimately reduce the prevalence of drug abuse as they become older. The program’s overall objectives include decreasing drug abuse risk by reducing motivations to use drugs and diminishing vulnerability to pro-drug social influences. The program comprises three major components: 1) general self-management skills 2) social skills, and 3) information and skills related to drug use. LifeSkills Training is one of ten interventions selected by the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence for inclusion among its "Blueprints" programs, and is highlighted in the Drug Strategies publication, Making the Grade, and in the 1998 Annual Report on School Safety.
