Program Name Safe Dates

Safe Dates is a combined primary and secondary prevention program that aims to prevent dating violence and abusive relationships. Primary prevention is carried out through a curriculum and other school activities. Secondary prevention is administered in both the school and surrounding community. The program aims to change students’ norms about acceptable dating behaviors, increase conflict management skills, encourage help-seeking behaviors, and improve community resources for victims and perpetrators of dating violence. Safe Dates is highlighted in the Drug Strategies publication Safe Schools, Safe Students: A Guide to Violence Prevention Strategies, and in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine’s Youth Violence Prevention: Descriptions and Baseline Data from 13 Evaluation Projects (supported by funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). It is also featured in the 1998 Annual Report on School Safety.
