| Program Name | Strengthening Families Program: For Parents and Youth 10-14 (also known as Iowa Strengthening Families) |
The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a universal, family-based intervention developed to improve parents’ child management skills, parent-child relationships, and family communication. In particular, SFP seeks to delay the onset of adolescent alcohol/substance use, and aggressive-destructive conduct by improving specific family practices and communication related to these behaviors. SFP 10-14 was the result of a major revision of the earlier Strengthening Families Program, developed by Karol Kumpfer and associates at the University of Utah. The earlier version was developed for substance-abusing parents and their children ages four to 10. The Iowa Strengthening Families Program, which was adapted and revised to create this program, is an OJJDP-validated intervention, and has been selected by the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence for inclusion among its “Promising” programs.
