| Program Name | Project STATUS (Students Training Through Urban Strategies) |
STATUS is a school-based program that helps students become active, responsible community members. The intervention combats youth anti-social behavior through two principle strategies: a school climate intervention, and an options class for delinquency-prone youth. STATUS is based on the belief that isolating students in “book-learning” environments separates them from the major institutions of public life and fails to inspire school commitment and belief in school rules. The options class is taught during a combined block of English and social studies and features a law-related curriculum. This curriculum strives to offer youth a more challenging and relevant educational experience and exposes them to major social institutions. STATUS aims to increase students’ pro-social behaviors by providing contact with positive adult role models, enhancing stakes in conformity, and altering peer relationships. STATUS has been selected by the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence for inclusion among its “Promising Programs.”
