Program Name Violence Prevention Curriculum for Adolescents (VPC)

The purpose of the Violence Prevention Curriculum for Adolescents (VPC) is to help students become more aware of homicide and the factors associated with it, positive ways to deal with anger and arguments, how fights begin and how they escalate, and the choices, other than fighting, that are available to adolescents in conflict situations. The goals of the curriculum are to 1) illustrate that violence is preventable; 2) teach students that anger is a normal part of life, and that anger can be expressed and channeled in healthy, constructive ways; 3) help students understand that controlling anger and violence is part of maturing; 4) identify for students positive ways to express anger; and 5) help them to think about and use alternatives to violence in conflict situations. VPC is part of the Teenage Health Teaching Modules program, a comprehensive school health education curriculum for adolescents. VPC is highlighted in the Illinois Council for the Prevention of Violence’s Peacing It Together: A Violence Prevention Resource for Illinois Schools.
